Widely distributed throughout the planet, geodes are the main source of minerals in mineralogical collections because they are an optimal medium for various mineral formations.
The wordgeodecomes from the Greek γεώδης ( geôgive,'like the Earth'), itself made up of γῆ (wow,'Earth') and ειδος ( eïtwo, 'shape, aspect'). The fact that it refers to the roundness of the Earth has led to a debate about whetherdrusen(flattened cavities) could be described as geodes.
Geodes are one of the most rewarding finds in the search for minerals in the field.
At first glance they look like simple unattractive looking stones, but when opened they are a harmony and perfection of crystals.
